July sees the completion of Contract 4 at Wichelstowe. Contract 4 included the construction of roads and associated structures between East Wichel and Mill Lane (including a section of the Croft Road to Hay Land Link Road, the Central Distributor Road and the bus and cycle STAr route), a 1km stretch of canal, amenity lakes and attenuation ponds, two wildlife ponds and a noise attenuation bund. It is a prime example of the successful delivery of green infrastructure, which has been carefully planned to maximise opportunities for biodiversity and the benefits are already being seen. Contract 4 also enhances the opportunities for people to gain access to nature through the improvement of existing bridleways and footpaths and also the provision of new footpaths around the lakes and alongside the canal.

You could almost be forgiven for thinking that the UK missed spring this year given the glorious sunshine that we had. However, some things can’t have been missed such as the breeding birds and the brightness of the new leaves on the trees. Wildlife sightings within the Wichelstowe site this spring include deer, herons, mallards, moorhens, grasshopper warbler (red listed bird species) and reptiles.

The weather is becoming milder and amphibians are stirring out of hibernation and there have already been several sightings in ponds. This indicates the start of the great crested newt survey season (mid-March and mid-June)! In preparation, Ecosulis has reflected back on our newt survey results from 79 ponds in 2010 and considers how the relatively new Habitat Suitability Index (HSI) is being used and what benefits it brings to the consideration of newts and works affecting newt habitat.
