Wiltshire, 16th March 2011- Ecosulis has had a great start in 2011 and is delighted to have been awarded two prestigious habitat creation projects in quick succession. Following a competitive tendering process, Ecosulis were selected by the Environment Agency and are now mobilising teams to complete the work within the critical timeframes available.
The first project award is to work on the Nottingham Flood Alleviation Scheme, Attenborough Lakes SSSI, where Ecosulis will be working closely with the Environment Agency to ensure that the proposed habitat planting works offer high quality areas of reedbed, fen swamp and wet woodland to species present on the site.
The Attenborough SSSI covers some 360 acres and is comprised of a number of lakes that were created as a result of gravel extraction. It provides a valuable habitat for over-wintering waterfowl and sustains an important breeding bird community.
The habitats will provide browsing, nesting and roosting opportunities for numerous Dragonfly, moth and fish species as well as Herons, Marsh Harriers, Bearded Tits, Water Rails, Bitterns, Buntings and Reed Warblers.
The second project that has been awarded is the Upper Mole Flood Alleviation Scheme, Tilgate Lake, where Ecosulis has been appointed to undertake planting work to ensure that the dam and borrow pit are integrated into the surrounding park at Tilgate, Crawley.
The works that are required include tree and shrub planting along the edge of the existing woodland surrounding the borrow pit, planting of marginals, reedbed and herbaceous species around the borrow pit and installation of bird predation fencing.
In response to the awards Cain Blythe, Managing Director of Ecosulis believes that:
“Both Attenborough Lakes and Tilgate Lake are flagship projects and we are really pleased that sites like this continue to provide positive enhancement for biodiversity, while offering important public services."
