Natural capital is directly linked to Ecosystem services, which is the value of ecosystems on economies, society and biodiversity. It is important to consider the overall value of green spaces and natural, habitats not just to biodiversity but to flood alleviation, recreation and food production to name a few.

The Breeding Bird Survey is a nationwide survey supported by the British Trust for Ornithology (BTO), Joint Nature Conservation Committee (JNCC) and the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB). As well as monitoring the population of birds, this survey also serves as a way of assessing the overall health of the countryside in general.

Smarter Guidance is being developed by Defra and aims to reduce environmental policy and guidance from 400 to around 30 documents with around 500 pages of information instead of 6,0000 - an estimated 90% reduction in data volume. While this will depend on the process of collecting and interpreting the data, there is confidence that this process can be streamlined and made more user friendly, with the overall objective of improving biodiversity and environmental protection.

Ecological consultants often recommend installing bat boxes as mitigation for lost roosts or as “biodiversity enhancing” features. But bats are not the only animals that use them.

Ecologists always encourage the use of native plant species within landscape plans for schemes, as these usually provide the most benefit to wildlife. Research by scientists at Anglia Ruskin University has shown that the presence of exotic, non-native trees and shrubs is having a negative impact on bird populations in British parks, therefore supporting the recommendation to keep plant species British when designing schemes.
