Ecosulis attended the 2015 Oxford University Biosymposium which focused on the functions and values of biodiversity. The symposium presented several viewpoints on this topic, from biologists to chemists and economists, to deliver a holistic viewpoint of the role of biodiversity. The key message that I have taken from the symposium is that we have a lot of viewpoints and data from a range of projects and that still too many disciplines are operating in silos. However, there is now an urgency to establish a way to implement these ideals to make a difference to our biodiversity, because we cannot live without nature and therefore it is right to value it.

Ecosulis’s has been appointed by the University of Cambridge’s Sustainability Leader programme to produce a casestudy into the externalities of corn production. The valuation of externalities is important to understand how sustainable an activity is when non monetised aspects are included.

During the International Year of Biodiversity one of the key issues that scientists, politicians and decision makers have struggled with is how to effectively monitor, measure and interpret changes in biodiversity, particularly where susceptible, relict and less accessible environments are concerned. This blog introduces Ecosulis’s approach to measuring biodiversity.
