Natural England and Woking Borough Council have launched a pilot scheme to explore whether a new system can be implemented to save developers cost and money whilst providing more comprehensive mitigation and compensation for great crested newts.

Although long term effects in the UK are hard to identify, the introduction of the Italian great crested newt along with the hybridization of the two species is sure to have a detrimental effect on our already declining great crested newt populations.

For the 2015 survey season Ecosulis have plans to provide eDNA testing of ponds for presence and absence of Great Crested Newts. eDNA, or environmental DNA, testing is ideal for developers with a long lead time on projects who are looking to scope out potential great crested newt populations and give full consideration to ecological requirements within the scheme, particularly those with multiple ponds.

2010 saw an end to a long term mitigation strategy designed and implemented by Ecosulis. The consultancy team were pleased to report back positive results for the scheme which saw an overall 50% rise in the great crested newt population since monitoring began.
