In October 2011 Natural England decided to withdraw the first edition of the Reptile Mitigation Guidelines (September 2011), in order to seek further feedback and to provide further clarification. Here we consider the implications of this on reptile surveys and mitigation strategies undertaken since September 2011 and going forward into 2012.

All of England’s reptile species have suffered declines, to varying extents across the country. For the widespread species, development without adequate mitigation continues to be a significant reason for this decline. Natural England’s new guidance is an updated single set of standards for good practice in reptile mitigation. It will be useful for developers and local planning authorities alike.
