The new Water Vole Mitigation Handbook has been published and includes changes to displacement and relocation methods. Our HCEC team have been helping Oxford University with a project comparing different displacements methods and their effectiveness for water vole mitigation. Our consulting and contracting teams spent a day undertaking water vole training in June.

The start of 2016 has been a busy for the habitat creation team here at Ecosulis. We have been planting a native woodland in Crawley, as part of a large flood alleviation scheme, vegetation clearance for a large housing development in Swindon and wetland maintenance for the Environment Agency in Buckland Marsh.

New water vole guidelines are set to be released towards the end of this year. There are likely to be some significant changes to the way water vole surveys need to be undertaken, and how water vole mitigation strategies can be implemented.

This two-part Blog considers the practical implications of water vole and the protection it is afforded in respect to works affecting aquatic habitat, be it conservation, maintenance, management or development works. Part 2 of this Blog considers the displacement method in more detail, which is Ecosulis’s preferred method of mitigation where water voles are present and avoidance is not possible.
