All of England’s reptile species have suffered declines, to varying extents across the country. For the widespread species, development without adequate mitigation continues to be a significant reason for this decline. Natural England’s new guidance is an updated single set of standards for good practice in reptile mitigation. It will be useful for developers and local planning authorities alike.

The England Biodiversity Strategy includes a commitment to “to halt overall biodiversity loss, support healthy well-functioning ecosystems and establish coherent ecological networks, with more and better places for nature for the benefit of wildlife and people.” The Strategy sets out four key outcomes that will be achieved through a series of priority actions categorised into four areas. A summary of each of these has been provided.

Biodiversity enhancements within developments are becoming increasingly important, with Local Planning Authorities and BREEAM assessors requesting ecological features to be incorporated within developments, including new builds. Natural England protected species licences also usually require ecological enhancements to be incorporated within the development design. With consideration at the design stage, such features can be easily incoporated at low cost.
