The Breeding Bird Survey is a nationwide survey supported by the British Trust for Ornithology (BTO), Joint Nature Conservation Committee (JNCC) and the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB). As well as monitoring the population of birds, this survey also serves as a way of assessing the overall health of the countryside in general.

Smarter Guidance is being developed by Defra and aims to reduce environmental policy and guidance from 400 to around 30 documents with around 500 pages of information instead of 6,0000 - an estimated 90% reduction in data volume. While this will depend on the process of collecting and interpreting the data, there is confidence that this process can be streamlined and made more user friendly, with the overall objective of improving biodiversity and environmental protection.

Progress has been made since the previous Natural Environment White Paper. This new white paper aims to further improve habitats and implement more effective solutions and schemes including those relating to natural capital, ecosystem services and green infrastructure.

The deadline for submitting written evidence to the common agricultural policy inquiry is Wednesday 9 October 2013. It is hoped that the feedback received from farmers and communities involved in environmental issues will look at the CAP and assess its potential environmental impact.

It remains to be seen whether it is possible to reverse the decline of bees and other pollinators. However, recent research suggests that it is possible to boost the population of pollinators and in turn improve the environment.

Ecological consultants often recommend installing bat boxes as mitigation for lost roosts or as “biodiversity enhancing” features. But bats are not the only animals that use them.

The Cider industry is reliant on bees to pollinate their apple trees but beekeepers are warning that if the current trend in the decrease of bees continues apple harvest, and consequently cider production, could be greatly affected.
