The Environment Agency were faced with the challenge of undertaking habitat creation works and planting significant numbers of aquatic plants in newly created habitat within the Site of Special Scientific Interest, as part of flood alleviation works at Attenborough Lakes Nature Reserve. The project had considerable public interest and other factors such as water quality, goose predation and algae control needed to be considered.

Our team completed the first phase of the reedbed creation scheme, which involved the planting of 44,000 aquatic plants into a man made bed which will form a new reedbed covering 0.6 hectares.

The project presented many challenges that the team has risen to and the project has been delivered on time and within budget. Due to the expert knowledge provided by the planting team, Ecosulis were requested to undertake an additional area of trial planting (5,000 reeds) within a notoriously difficult area for establishing reedbeds.

Spring 2012 saw us return to plant 150,000 plants into different areas of the nature reserve and Ecosulis has since been commissioned to undertake the management and maintenance of the enhancement areas until 2015.

The Attenborough SSSI covers some 360 acres and is comprised of a number of lakes that were created as a result of gravel extraction.
