Our role: Ecosulis undertook bat surveys of the barn and found roosting brown long-eared bats to be present in two sections of the barn to be converted into offices. A Natural England licence was prepared to enable the conversion to be undertaken. The application was successful to accommodate the retention of one of the roosts in a two-storey section of the barn, with modifications for air conditioning and electrics. A ceiling was installed in the other section, which was originally a one-storey open barn in order to provide roosting space for the bats. A new entrance to this section was provided. 20 bat boxes of several designs were also installed on trees within the grounds to provide additional roosting habitat for bats.
Monitoring in 2008 revealed that brown-long-eared bats continue to roost in the two-storey section and potential foraging evidence was found in the one-storey section.
