Ecosulis was selected through OJEC tender by Cardiff County Council to carry out an assessment of grassland habitats in and around Cardiff, amounting to eight sites covering 100ha. The brief was to assess the grasslands to identify those worthy of more detailed survey and those that have potential to meet targets for restoration or recreation.

Ecosulis was appointed to assist in developing new SMART targets for the Cardiff Habitat Action Plans (HAPs) and this requires up-to-date information on the extent and condition of each priority habitat. The reason this is required is because the UK Government signed the Convention on Biological Diversity in 1992 enforced by the Natural Environment and Rural Communities Act 2006 . In response to this it produced the UK Biodiversity Action Plan (BAP) setting out a range of targets for the protection of biological resources. There are 391 species and 45 habitat action plans that are currently under review. Much of the UK BAP is delivered through local partnerships, which translate national targets into local targets and actions.

The Cardiff Local BAP includes HAPs for Neutral and Calcareous grassland, which were the primary habitats of interest within our study area. Experienced botanists of Ecosulis, recorded and mapped vegetation at the sites. Extensive species list were created along with abundance scores, relative percentage cover of vegetation stands and sward height.
