Our role:

In December 2005, Ecosulis was involved in the translocation of sections of hedgerows on land at Eastbourne Road, Uckfield, East Sussex. A number of hedgerows at the site had wildlife value as habitat, refuge and as a foraging resource and were of District Value. The site was subject to an application for residential development and sections of important hedgerows, which were directly affected by the development, were translocated to an alternative suitable location on site.

An arboricultural specialist oversaw all works to ensure that the process was carried out to a detailed specification with the aims of preserving the value of the hedgerows, minimising damage to the root structure of the cells and promoting vigorous re-growth. A trenching saw was used to cut trenches parallel to and along each side of the hedgerow and then divide the sections of hedgerow into cells approximately 1m in length. Each cell was then lifted into the new trenches using a JCB type excavator. Once in position, backfill soil was placed around the cells and firmed using the excavator bucket to ensure no air pockets were present.

Hedgerows and associated features were monitored for two years post translocation. A range of measures were implemented in order to protect both the retained and translocated sections of hedgerows from disturbance during the construction and operational phases of the proposed development. These measures included:

  • Preparation of a Construction Environmental Management Plan (CEMP)
  • Regular environmental audits by an Ecological/Arboricultural Clerk of the Works during the construction phase
  • Supplementary planting of locally and regionally sourced native species of trees and shrubs
  • 5m buffer zones incorporating the hedgerows
