The hydrogen refuelling facility project in Hornchurch formed part of the largest fuel cell technology project in the world. The project complemented the European Commissions actions on alternative fuels and demonstrates the feasibility of zero emission public transport. The Hornchurch site was developed as a hydrogen refuelling site in 2005, which consists of a circular asphalt road (lined with recessed lights), a parking bay, trief kerbing, an underground chamber (hydrogen fuel storage), a facility structure and ventilation tower.
Under guidance from Ecosulis and a Natural England licence, the construction of these facilities involved the removal of ephemeral/perennial vegetation, topsoil removal and subsoil excavation. An area of foraging habitat for great crested newt was restored to grassland during the decommissioning phase and seeded with a wildflower mix of local native origins.
