Before submitting planning permission a bat Habitat Suitability Assessment (HSA) was required, during which evidence of use by lesser horseshoe bats was discovered. A full suite of emergence and swarming surveys were undertaken in 2015 as the works would result in the permanent loss of a bat roost and a licence would be required.
Ecosulis worked closely with the school and NVB Architects to produce a Natural England EPS Bat Mitigation Licence. Several compensatory solutions were put forward to determine their feasibility within the scheme. Due to there being listed building and historical conservation concerns in addition, the most appropriate solution makes use of an adjacent building. Designs include custom made access points with protection against cats and nesting birds as well as internal modifications to maintain ideal microclimates and lighting levels.
Works to create the compensation roost are now under way and renovation of the Arion Coach House will proceed in 2016, once the NE Bat Licence has been approved.
