The site is located 3km to the north-east of Chard and 4km south of Ilminster, and lies within 1km of the village of Knowle St Giles.
Ecosulis undertook all mitigation work required to enable the replacement of a water supply main consisting of approximately 450m of pipeline aligned north-east/south-west within a number of field systems along the line of the existing pipeline. The works fell within 250m of a known breeding great crested newt pond. Ecosulis installed approximately 1,000m of great crested newt fencing along the perimeter of the pipeline route. Two newt grids were installed at site entrance points.
Pitfall traps were located on the inside of the perimeter fence along with refugia and were checked over a period of 35 days. Any great crested newts and other amphibians encountered were relocated outside of the newt fencing within suitable habitat away from the works.
