Our role: As part of modernisation plans, Ventnor Golf Club are proposing to install three wind turbines on land within the golf club. Ecosulis contributed to an initial environmental and master planning assessment for a planning application by undertaking ecological surveys of the site and subsequent surveys for bats. The surveys aimed to identify potential ecological constraints and opportunities within the proposals, to ensure that ecology is fully considered within any development plans.

In assessing the ecological considerations and recommendations relating to the proposals, based on the findings of the Phase 1 habitat survey, reference was made to several areas of research on the impacts of wind farms on wildlife, including information from Natural England, Birdlife International and the Danish Windfarm Energy Association, and liaison undertaken with the County Ecologist.

Properly scoped and designed, windfarms have potential to produce significant amounts of energy without harm to wildlife, and to contribute to the Isle of Wight’s Eco Island Sustainable Community Strategy. A recent statement by the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB) calls for a significant increase in the number of onshore windfarms built in the UK, and says that with an effective planning system, the UK could greatly increase onshore wind development without damaging nature conservation.
