Our role: Ecosulis was commissioned to carry out an assessment of inter-tidal invertebrates associated with specially-created micro-niches in the vertical flood defence walls at Rochester Riverside Walk, Rochester. The aim of the survey was to survey and assess the presence and diversity of inter-tidal invertebrates associated with the micro-niches within the flood defence walls; generate an inventory of the species present and baseline data for comparison with future surveys; develop a monitoring protocol to allow the re-survey of the micro-niches using a repeatable method; and identify possible enhancement and other measures to improve the wildlife value of vertical flood defence walls.

The survey method adopted broadly followed Jones 1999, but was adapted to take into account site conditions. Additionally, a survey for strandline invertebrates was also undertaken.
