Our role: The new student residences at the University of Bath's Claverton campus have received an award for ‘Excellent' environmental design, marking the project out as one of only three in the country to achieve the status. The award was made by the Building Research Establishment's BREEAM Environmental Award Scheme (under its BRE Global BREEAM Multi-Residential 2005 Scheme), which rewards designs that take positive steps to minimise environmental impact.

An internationally protected site is located approximately 300m from the site, designated for its importance to roosting lesser and greater horseshoe bats. Ecosulis was commissioned to assist in the consideration of horseshoe bats and other ecological receptors within the development proposals and also to provide advise in respect to maximising the number of BREEAM credits available in relation to ecology and biodiversity.

Features of ecological interest on the site are limited and primarily relate to the mature hedgerow and standard trees along the eastern boundary of the site, which was confirmed as a commuting and foraging route for a range of bat species, including greater horseshoe bats. Following these findings, design proposals were prepared to avoid disturbance to bats during the construction and operational phases of the development. Ecological input was also provided in respect to enhancing ecology on site, which included recommendations such as the installation of bat and bird boxes, creation of log piles and native planting. Ecosulis also prepared a five-year Ecological Management Plan for the site. Ecosulis was retained throughout the construction phase to advise on the works in relation to ecology and to implement the recommendations relating to habitat creation.
