Our role: The University of West of England (UWE) Fenchay Campus is proposed for expansion, including the development of a new Business School, a new swimming pool, further sports facilities and an expansion of the library. The development masterplan is still to be confirmed. The development site currently comprises office and laboratory buildings, car parking and relatively large areas of semi-natural habitats including two ponds. Ecosulis were commissioned to assist in the consideration of ecology within the development masterplan.

Ecosulis has been involved with the ecological aspects of the site, undertaking surveys of the proposed site and immediate surroundings throughout 2009 to assess their ecological value. Common pipistrelle and brown long-eared bats were recorded on the site, commuting and foraging during the three evening surveys. Surveys for water vole, otter and great crested newt were also undertaken.

Following the observations on the site, mitigation proposals have been drafted, with recommendations such as retention of ponds, wherever possible, and that these ponds be subject to sympathetic management practices to maintain and enhance their value to wildlife. Ecological considerations have also been recommended, which include planting schemes to increase foraging opportunities for bats and the incorporation of bat boxes or bat tubes within the new development.
