Ecosulis was commissioned by Wessex Water to undertake great crested newt surveys of a proposed pipeline neat West Ashton and Semington. The works proposed on site include the installation of a new water main pipeline. Three survey methods were used to undertake the surveys, including bottle-trapping, egg searches and torch searches.

Despite several ponds scoring Good and Excellent on the HSI assessments, no great crested newts were recorded from any of the nine ponds surveyed. Smooth newts were found to be present. Due to the absence of great crested newts from the surveys, no licence was required to undertake the pipeline works. Recommendations were also made to enhance the biodiversity potential of the ponds, including reducing over-shading, and reducing the existing vegetation cover of one of the ponds to encourage establishment of more diverse vegetation.
