Reptiles

The four most common species of reptile, including grass snake, slow worm, adder and common lizard, receive partial protection under The Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981 (and amendments). Smooth snake and sand lizard are fully protected under the Conservation (Natural Habitats & c.) (Amendment) Regulations 2007 and the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981, as amended.

Reptiles are most commonly observed in grassland and heathland sites, although they are also associated with scrub, wetlands, woodland and coastal habitats. Reptiles can often be found in association with man-made habitats such as railway embankments, road verges, churchyards and golf courses, particularly where there are areas with a sunny south facing slope and open vegetation.
