Dormouse

The dormouse is fully protected under the Conservation (Natural Habitats & c.) (Amendment) Regulations 2007 and the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981, as amended.

This species is a nocturnal animal found predominantly in deciduous woodland and overgrown hedgerows. The species has limited distribution throughout the UK and is mainly found in the south, notably in Devon, Somerset, Sussex and Kent. There are also small populations recorded in the Lake District and Wales.

ecosulis ltd employs licensed dormice handlers and the services we offer with respect to dormice, include:

  • Dormouse surveys, including hazelnut search and identification, nest tube and nest box surveys, searches for nests
  • Habitat assessment, to determine suitability of sites for dormouse (often as part of Phase 1 habitat survey)
  • Natural England, Welsh Assembly and Scottish Natural Heritage licence preparation and management
  • Dormouse mitigation (under licence where necessary), including erection of nest boxes, capture and release and ecological clerk of works
  • Habitat enhancement and creation, including woodland and hedgerow planting and cutting
  • Long-term monitoring and habitat management
